WOMEN'S HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY

DURING PREGNANCY:

Physical therapy, with the right precautions, can be beneficial to remedying common discomforts like back pain and helping to prepare your body for an easier pregnancy and delivery. The literature clearly states that low back pain may be disabling, limiting everyday activities, impacting productivity and should not be ignored or left untreated.

It is estimated that up to 70% of women experience back pain and pelvic girdle pain (PGP) during pregnancy. The cause of much pregnancy pain and discomfort can be traced to the hormone relaxin, which is released during pregnancy and causes the ligaments to relax. It can pull the pelvis and lower back in different directions and place a strain in different areas causing pelvic, hip, or back pain. Due to this hormone, the body can compensate and muscle guard to attempt to create stability, causing muscle spasm. The additional gaining of weight and change in the center of gravity can add stress to these parts of the body and cause balance and coordination deficits.

POSTPARTUM:

Many women struggle to lose the weight they have gained during pregnancy and struggle to restore abdominal musculature lost during pregnancy. Physical Therapy can help with all of the aforementioned and our practice is specialized in the following:

  • Posture Re-education
  • Myofascial release
  • Joint Alignment techniques
  • Muscle Strengthening
  • Flexibility
  • Alleviating nerve pain
  • Lymphedema Taping to reduce swelling
